The Bird's of Paradise
The Birds of Paradise started in Fuengirola, not long after the demise of the Binajack Band. I had met Karen and Grainne some time before. Karen had set up some Irish gigs for Binajack. One night, in the famous Sal's Paradise, I got up to jam with the girls. The sound we made was really good and the crowd let us know they enjoyed it. We were three acoustic guitars and harmony vocals, simplistic but good. I knew something good was going to come out of this. We had a chat and decided to call the new outfit, The Birds of Paradise, inspired by the flower of the same name. I had played a lot of acoustic before, but this really opened up a whole new field for me.
I was now playing licks on the acoustic, that I had only ever played on electric guitar. In fact I hadn’t heard anyone else playing quite like this, It was, and is, fab. The other two play rhythm and sing wonderful harmonies and I bash out lead licks and solos on the acoustic. We very soon got offered a regular spot at Ponderosa Roadhouse and Old Town Tavern both in Fuengirola. We then had a spot in the Irish caseta, but of course, at the Ferria los Pueblos. Also known as international week, a yearly event in Fuengirola. The band spent a short while with just two of us. Karen went back to Ireland to have her baby, while Grainne and myself kept the thing alive down at Ponderosa. Grainne joined the Mama Paula Blues Band and sang with us at the Mijas Blues Festival in June 2008. There were some seriously good blues singers at this event and Grainne was as good as the best of em! It now turns out that we are all going to be in Ireland together again, and I for one am so pleased about it. I know the girls are excited too, thus, The Burds are Back in Town. Lookout Charleville!
We have written some new stuff and are going to record it next month. This all new album will be available to download soon on this site. Copies will also be available from our gigs, the dates will be posted here too. We will be playing all over Ireland, and a couple of gigs in Monaco too. A new photo shoot is planed and I will stick some up on this site so you know who we are when you walk in the pub, and then you can buy us a drink!
